On a recent trip to South Africa, our first stop (after an overnight stay in Johannesburg) was the Kapama Private Game Reserve just outside in Hoedspruit.
Getting there, after a long 13.5 hour non-stop flight from Sydney, was easy. It was just an hour's flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit airport, where we met our local guide, Hancho, who then drove us across the road and straight into the Reserve. Easy!
As it happened, we had chosen to stay at the smallest of the four camps in Kapama - Buffalo Camp could accommodate only 20 or so guests - its luxurious timber lodges were built on stilts and set apart in the bush so they were very private and beautifully appointed. But they did creak a bit when the breeze got up.
On day two we discovered a small herd of antelope that had made the camp grounds their home but we also discovered a couple of bush babies that appeared at night and peered at us through the tree branches above our lodge. Very cute. Called Nagapies ('night monkeys') in Afrikaans, these little critters looked very similar to Madagascan lemurs but that's as far as their relationship stretches.
